RADAR Tech Session
Presentation & Discussion
On April 15th, 2017 about 35 CANE members and prospective CANE members attended a presentation and discussion on RADAR with Bob Gad. Bob is great at making what could be a boring subject interesting. It was extremely informative and we all learned much about how to set and interpret our RADAR units on our boats. If you missed it here is a link to the pre-reading material which can also be a reference.
About Robert Gad:
A retired lawyer, Bob has studied advanced radar plotting, celestial navigation, & close quarters ship handling. He has been sailing boats for 50 yrs. , now sailing his 40’ sloop PRESCINDING out of Fairhaven with his wife Karen. He also
occasionally serves as navigator & pilot on a salvage & rescue tugboat.

Spring Commissioning Seminar held, 25 Feb 2017
21 CANE members showed up @ Scituate Boatyard to hear Peter Galvin, of Scituate Yacht Sales, host a very interesting, & informative discussion about Spring commissioning our water born loved ones.
Sailing is Peter's lifelong passion, and throughout his career he has sold boats for nearly every manufacturer in America and Europe. He has a special knowledge of Catalinas as he was with Eastern YS for nearly 20 yrs - & has even, for some of us, sold boats to us, & for us. He continues to sail out of Scituate & loves to share the knowledge that he has accumulated over the years.
This was a fun morning sharing tips & stories with friends - stuffed
in amongst the boats. With the 67 degrees, it felt like time to gather up the ladders & wax.
Peter Hunt, Marine Surveyor
On Saturday October 21st at the Acushnet River Safe Boating Club in Fairhaven, MA, Peter Hunt gave a great presentation about surveying boats, what it entails, and common issues to look for on our own boats.
Following the meeting we had a pot luck luncheon.
Spring Brunch
May 21, 2017
On May 21st 2017 11:00 AM about 27 CANE members treked to the Mill Wharf Restaurant in Scituate for our annual spring brunch and get together. Great brunch and conversations ensued. Thanks to Jay Schwartz for organizing it. Now let's get boating!
Diesel Engine Seminar
Tips & Discussion in John Payne's Marblehead HS Diesel Lab
March 11, 2017 twenty one hardy CANE members braved the freezing cold weather to experience John's diesel lab, and hear him answer all questions about our engines and power trains.. He did just that for over 2 hours with many of us taking notes and pictures..
Judy Dougherty summed it up:
"As usual the time spent listening to John Payne was invaluable. His format today using questions from us all really worked to our interests and concerns. Our group is lucky to have his knowledge within reach. Now to find a discount heat exchanger! "
CANE @ 2017 BoatShow

A week before the show we found out that Springline Yacht Sales of (Mystic, CN): Secureyourdream.com had invited us to join them @ the Boat Show. So we did! & they were great partners.
Mary Ann's cheese squares & brownies assured a return engagement, as they were a huge hit with the sales team. Way to go Mary Ann!
The results are not all in yet, but it looks like we got 4-6 new members - & a couple of renewals; not the greatest - but pretty good. If the show moves back to its regular time (school vacation week), & with the earlier notice, we should do quite well.
My thanks go out to all who manned the booth. I had a great time, & I hope the rest of you did as well. It really is fun to watch & talk to all the people who stop by... & of course all of you.
