How to Use the Email List Overview:

CANE started an email group in late 2004.  The primary purpose of this group is to enhance communication between the association and members, and from member to member.

Any member of CANE can be a member of the group, given an email address is provided.  Membership in the group is NOT mandatory.  You may unsubscribe at any time.

If after reading through this page you still have questions of concerns, send an email Al Ferreira and I'll try to get you an answer as soon as I can.

What is a mailing list?

A mailing list is simply a program that facilitates the sending of email messages to a large group of people.   This is done in an automated fashion.  When a message is sent in, it is automatically (and pretty much immediately) forwarded to the group.

We have set up our email group using a free service provided by Google.  With this service we not only get the automated forwarding of emails, but if you go to http://groups.google.com/group/CANE you will see that all of the emails can be read on-line.

How Do I Join?

There are a couple of ways for you to join.

First, as the owner of the list CANE, I can add you directly.   If you are not already a member but would like to be added, email Al Ferreira and I'll get you on it right away.

As an alternative, you can request entry by going to the group at http://groups.google.com/group/CANE and clicking on "request to subscribe".  In the end it's pretty much the same as emailing me directly.

How do I post a message

There are several ways.

First, if you want to start a new "thread" or discussion topic, you can create a new message with a new subject.  Then simply email your message to CANE@googlegroups.com

Second, you could go the on-line version of the forum at http://groups.google.com/group/CANE.   Here you can either reply to a topic, or click on Discussions and then +new post, if that is what you want to do.

Finally, you can just reply to any email received from the group.

How do I leave the group?

Please don't!  But if you really want to you can either send an email toor go the the Google site and click "Unsubscribe or Change Membership"

Is there any way to cut down on all of the messages?

Yes.  If you go to the on-line forum at http://groups.google.com/group/CANE and click "Unsubscribe or Change Membership" you will get the screen shown below -

Note that under "Edit my membership" you have the option of:

Another, rather simple, thing - if your email program supports "rules" you may want to set up a separate folder for CANE list emails. Then simply create a rule to move any emails coming in from the list to that folder. It won't cut down on the messages, but it will make them a heck of a lot more organized.

Will I get more SPAM because I'm on this list?

We took care to review the Google terms and conditions before setting up the list.  As those terms stand now you will receive no extra mail from either Google or other companies.

HOWEVER - this is a free service and terms and conditions are not contractual.  They can change.  We will monitor the status, keep everyone informed, and take action if need be.

BUT - these days everyone should consider anti-spam software.  www.McAfee.com and www.Symantec.com both have excellent products for this.

Can I get a computer virus from the list?

Yes

Yes

Let me say it again... yes.

The list is nothing more than a mechanism for forwarding emails.  You can get a virus from this list just the same as you could from any email.  Because this is any email.

OK, scared?  I'm sorry.  Just trying to be upfront and honest.  But it's not the end of the world.

Even more so than with anti-spam filters, EVERY computer should be protected by anti-virus software.  Again the two links just above (www.McAfee.com and www.Symantec.com) are the two leaders in the industry for this sort of stuff.  If you have AOL, make sure you have the latest version, which includes anti-spam software.

Here's is one more tip - this list, quite unusually for these services, allows us to send attachments.  That's both a blessing and a curse. Viruses are mostly transmitted via attachments.  If you ever see a message with an attachment from someone you do not recognize DELETE the message immediately.
