2011 East Coast Catalina Rendezvous
July 29 - 31 New Bedford Harbor
Beautiful Catalina’s ranging from 25 to 47 feet gathered at Pope’s Island Marina in New Bedford, Massachusetts for the East Coat Catalina Rendezvous. The CANE group was well represented by: Aldebaran, Andante, Birds Nest, Cassiopeia, Coda, Danneskjold, Even Keel, First Light, Goodnight Moon, Kira, Makin’ Progress, Netti Verde, Optimistic, Passion, Ruach, Siochanta, Star Dust and Summer Wind.
More than forty-five members participated in a minuteman tour of Fort Phoenix followed by an exclusive tour inside the hurricane barrier. The barrier is the largest stone structure on the East Coast, measuring 9,100 feet long and 20 feet above sea level The group traveled from the Fairhaven side down a narrow stairway 50 feet below sea level to the bottom where 2- 440 ton gates are located. The gates are not open to the public and since recent security issues it is very rare that a request is granted for a tour.
Following a barbeque dinner and brief presentation on the history of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the group renewed friendships and made new ones.
Gerry Douglas put together several great speakers for Saturday morning. Whether your interest was in steering, rigging, spinnakers, diesel engine, electronics or even if you just had questions for Gerry, someone was there to help you. After lunch the sailors were let lose on the town. Many took time to wait in line to visit the Coast Guard Eagle. Another rare treat arranged just for Catalina Members.
Saturday night the fleet feasted on a Portuguese meal with home made desserts and good fresh Portuguese rolls. The meal was followed by dancing and wonderful door prizes.
After Sunday’s full breakfast and more door prizes, it was time to return to our boats and sail home
