Summer Cruise 2010 - Cape Cod & Mass. Bay

The 2010 annual CANE summer cruise was well attended this year with ports of call from Plymouth to Salem.

Sunday July 11:   The day dawned cool and overcast with patchy fog.  Winds were from the north at 10-15 knots as 8 boats met in Plymouth Harbor to begin the cruise.  Moored in the harbor were Coda with cruise director Paul Dardano, Beth Shepherd, Sally, Suki and Spot, Passion with Dick Weiner and Bob Gurnitz, Let It Ride with Dave and Kathy Mariano, AppleJack with Mark and Lois Schmidt, Aldebaran with Mary and Paul Flannagan and Jerry Springer, Bright Spot with Carolyn Kirdahy, Steve and Nella Bernstein, Steve’s parent Irene and Leon Bernstein and Tasha, Siochanta with Judy Doherty and Jay Swartz, Cloud Nine with Brian & Cathy McCarthy, Erin McCarthy and Rosie.  The skies cleared with afternoon sun and heat.  The crews of Coda, AppleJack, Aldebaran, Siochanta and Cloud Nine enjoyed an evening cookout at the Plymouth Yacht Club.

Monday July12:  Weather was hot and sunny with ground fog and winds from SSE at 10 knots. The flotilla departed Plymouth at 9:00am for Provincetown.  Fog lifted around 10:00am and Goodnight Moon with Paul and Phyllis Robinson and Harry joined the group at Bug Light.  After fits and starts the wind picked up and shifted to fill the sails and the group sailed at hull speed to P-town.  Everyone safely arrived at the mooring field around 2:00pm.  Crosswind with Peter and Marilyn Sicurella and Dick Bevilacqua arrived safely from Onset and Bill and Joan Clarke aboard Second Wind arrived from Scituate.  Cocktails and appetizers were enjoyed at Coda’s slip that evening.

Tuesday July 13:  Sunny and very hot.  Lay day in Provincetown.  That evening Jay, Judy, Lois, Phyllis, Marilyn, Beth and Paul enjoyed one of P-town’s theatrical extravaganzas, “The Gulls”, an offbeat take off on Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”.

Wednesday July 14:  Cloudy, patchy fog and occasional drizzle.  7:30am departure for Scituate.  Coda, AppleJack, Goodnight Moon, Let It Ride, Crosswind, Siochanta, Aldebaran, Cloud 9 and Second Wind hoisted sails for a short 3 hours then motored to arrive in Scituate arount 1:00.  Bright Spot and Passion enjoyed another day in P-Town, bypassing Scituate.  The group met ashore at 5:00pm for refreshments at Satuit Yacht Club where Steve Dempsey and Scott McKinley aboard Amoreena joined us.  Great food, drink and company!  Thank you to Jay and Judy for making those arrangements.  Kathy, Marilyn, Lois and Beth enjoyed an exciting game of scrabble aboard Coda that evening while Paul, Mark and Dave discussed “boat stuff”!
Siochanta left the cruise and remained in her homeport of Scituate.

Thursday July 15:  Cloudy and cool with drizzle.  9 boats departed at 10:30am for Charlestown’s Constitution Marina.  With radar on, lookouts poised and foghorns blaring the group slowly motored at 3-4 knots through “pea soup” fog with visibility of about 1 boat length.  At Allerton Point the fog lifted revealing the Boston skyline.  Gemini II with Don and Beverly Kluberdanz joined the group in Boston Harbor.  Bright Spot and Passion out of P-town beat the fleet to Constitution Marina.  The flotilla made its way into Constitution Marina and the awaiting slips.  Some members enjoyed a dip in the pool during the hot and humid spell while others relaxed on their boats serenaded by the background of city sounds.

Friday July 16:  Cloud 9 returned to their homeport of Salem.  More relaxation at the pool for some, while others shopped downtown.  In the evening, The Pied Piper, AKA Scott MacKinlay led the group through the North End’s narrow, labyrinthine streets to Tresca’s where they enjoyed the social highlight of the cruise, an Italian dining experience arranged by Steve and Sheri Dempsey.  The group was surprised by a special appearance of one of our former commodore’s, the Honorable Judge Jay Hogan and wife Mary.

Saturday July 17:  Hot, sunny with no wind.  Departure to Salem 9:00am.  8 vessels left Boston motoring on flat seas.  An otherwise uneventful passage was punctuated by an inexplicable noise aboard Crosswind resulting in a call to Tow Boat US.  The fleet made slow headway awaiting the tow.  Second Wind escorted Crosswind until the assist boat arrived then met the fleet and guided us into Pickering Wharf.  A lively cocktail party was hosted by Apple Jack that evening followed by ice cream and fireworks over the harbor.

Sunday July 18:  Hot and very humid.  Bright Spot and Let It Ride headed home.  Goodnight Moon, Apple Jack, Coda, Crosswind and Gemini II stayed another night.

Monday July 19:  The 5 remaining vessels dropped their lines at 6:00am for their homeports.

As usual, friendships were renewed, expertise shared and many stories told.  We all look forward to the next CANE cruise.
